Proverbs 20:24 meaning

A man's steps are ordained by the LORD even though he plans them himself, which is why his life often arrives where he did not aim.

Proverbs 20:24 opens a window into providence: Man's steps are ordained by the LORD; how then can man understand his way? (v. 24). The verse holds together divine sovereignty and human responsibility.

A man takes his own steps. He is not absolved from the responsibility of choosing his path. He plans, he decides, he acts. The verse does not invite passivity.

And yet those steps are ordained by the LORD, and so man cannot fully understand his way. The wise person holds both. They recognize that the deeper movement of life is being guided by a God whose ways are higher than their own (Isaiah 55:9). The verse is humbling rather than fatalistic. It explains why our lives often arrive somewhere we did not exactly aim, and why hindsight reveals a coherence that foresight never could.
