1 Corinthians 14:2 meaning

In the context of spiritual gifts, Paul addresses the Corinthians' fascination with speaking in tongues, emphasizing the need for intelligibility in worship. The apostle clarifies that speaking in a foreign language without interpretation merely serves the speaker, offering no mutual benefit to others. This statement reveals his priority: communication should edify the congregation as a whole. In situations of worship, the goal should be clarity and understanding, allowing all attendees to participate in the shared experience of faith. Paul’s instruction calls for the exercise of gifts that encourage communal growth rather than personal exaltation.

This verse also emphasizes that speaking in tongues involves communicating mysteries to God rather than to men. In contrast, prophecy provides direct edification, as it speaks to the audience's understanding. Paul encourages the Corinthians to prioritize prophesying, as it serves both to comfort and build up the church community. Such edifying discourse promotes a healthier expression of faith, in line with the larger mission of the church to nurture believers and attract seekers.
