Proverbs 18:7 meaning

A fool’s own mouth becomes part of his ruin, trapping him through the words he speaks.

The previous thought deepens here in Proverbs 18:7: A fool’s mouth is his ruin, And his lips are the snare of his soul (v. 7). Foolish speech is not only socially damaging; it is spiritually destructive.

A fool’s mouth is his ruin because it repeatedly exposes the disorder of his heart and pulls him into consequences he could have avoided. He talks himself into conflict, shame, and collapse. His own speech becomes part of the machinery of his downfall.

Even more striking, his lips are the snare of his soul. A snare traps what enters it, and the fool’s speech traps him from within. This verse teaches that the tongue is not merely an outward tool. It can become a spiritual trap that entangles the whole person.
