Proverbs 22:3 meaning

The prudent man reads danger and steps aside, while the naive walks on into trouble he could have avoided.

A practical contrast on foresight comes in Proverbs 22:3: The prudent sees the evil and hides himself, but the naive go on, and are punished for it (v. 3). This verse will be repeated almost verbatim in later in Proverbs 27:12.

The prudent sees the evil and hides himself. Prudence here is not cowardice; it is the ability to read approaching trouble and step out of its way. Noah saw the flood coming and built. Joseph saw the famine coming and stored. The prudent man treats warnings as information.

The naive go on, and are punished for it. The naive person is not stupid, but unequipped. They keep walking the same path because they have not learned to read the signs that the path is about to give way. Wisdom includes the eye that sees danger before it arrives.
