Proverbs 22:6 meaning

Early training in the right way tends to hold over a lifetime, even into old age.

A famous verse on early formation arrives in Proverbs 22:6: Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it (v. 6). The verse has been read both as a promise and as a general principle.

Train up a child is to give shape to a young life through teaching, modeling, and correction repeated over years. The Hebrew suggests dedication, the consecrating of a child to a particular path. In the way he should go names the right way: the way of wisdom, the way of the LORD.

Even when he is old he will not depart from it. The verse names a powerful pattern. Early formation tends to hold over a lifetime. Solomon writes as a wise man observing how lives usually run, naming the strong general direction of well-trained lives. The verse encourages parents that the work of early training does not evaporate, while leaving room for the real freedom of a child who must finally choose the way for himself. 2 Timothy 1:5 traces Timothy's faith through his mother and grandmother in the same spirit.
