Proverbs 27:5 meaning

Open rebuke from a friend serves love better than affection that stays hidden.

Two kinds of love are set side by side in Proverbs 27:5Better is open rebuke than love that is concealed (v. 5).

Open rebuke. The friend who tells you the hard truth, who corrects you to your face, who risks your displeasure to spare you from a worse fate, has performed an act of love. The rebuke is unpleasant in the moment.

Love that is concealed. The friend who claims affection for you but keeps it to himself, who watches you walk into trouble without warning you, has not loved you well. His love is hidden, perhaps even from himself. The verse honors visible, costly correction over comfortable, silent affection.
