Proverbs 28:1 meaning

The wicked flee even when no one pursues them, while the righteous walk with the boldness of a lion.

Solomon opens the chapter with a contrast in posture in Proverbs 28:1The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, but the righteous are bold as a lion (v. 1). Two men respond to the same world differently.

The wicked man's interior is pursued. Guilt, fear of exposure, awareness of judgment all chase him from the inside: The wicked flee when no one is pursuing. He runs even when the road behind him is empty because the pursuit is not behind him; it is within him.

The righteous man, by contrast, walks through the same world with confidence because he is bold as a lion. His conscience is not pursuing him. His hands are clean enough that he does not have to look over his shoulder. The lion's boldness is not aggression; it is the calm assurance of a creature with nothing to fear from his own past. This can be compared to Paul's words in Romans 8:1, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." A righteous interior produces a fearless exterior.
