Proverbs 28:16 meaning

An oppressive leader lacks understanding, while one who hates unjust gain extends his rule.

The theme of corrupt rulers continues in Proverbs 28:16A leader who is a great oppressor lacks understanding, but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days (v. 16). The contrast is moral and practical.

A leader who is a great oppressor lacks understanding. The oppressive leader thinks he is being shrewd. Solomon names the truth. He is a man without understanding. His oppression will eventually destabilize his rule. He thinks himself strong; he is in fact short-sighted.

But he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days. The leader who hates corruption, in himself and in his administration, lengthens his rule. Honesty is good politics over the long term, regardless of how it looks in the short term. This can be compared to Proverbs 16:12 and 25:5, where the throne is established on righteousness.
