Proverbs 28:23 meaning

The honest rebuker is valued more, in time, than the smooth flatterer.

Proverbs 28:23 names how time changes rebuke and flattery: He who rebukes a man will afterward find more favor than he who flatters with the tongue (v. 23). The reversal of expectation is the point.

He who rebukes a man. The honest rebuker risks offense. His words land harder than the recipient wants. In the moment, the relationship feels strained.

Will afterward find more favor than he who flatters. The word afterward is the key. Time changes the perception. Once the recipient has worked through the rebuke, he begins to see who actually loved him. The flatterer, whose smooth words felt good in the moment, comes to be recognized as a manipulator. The honest rebuker comes to be valued as a true friend. The verse encourages those willing to speak hard truth in love. Their reward is delayed but real.
