Proverbs 29:10 meaning

Bloodthirsty men hate the blameless, while the upright work to preserve his life.

Two responses to a blameless man are mentioned in Proverbs 29:10: Men of bloodshed hate the blameless, but the upright are concerned for his life (v. 10). Hostility from one side, protection from the other.

The phrase Men of bloodshed hate the blameless names those whose lives are oriented toward harm. They hate the blameless because the blameless man's life is a constant rebuke to theirs. His existence shows that another way is possible.

But the upright are concerned for his life because they recognize the danger the blameless man faces from those who hate him, and they actively seek to preserve his life. The verse names a real social pattern. Threatened evil targets innocence; integrity defends it. The wise community recognizes who its enemies and protectors are.
