Proverbs 29:7 meaning

The righteous attend to the rights of the poor, while the wicked do not even understand the concern.

Two postures of awareness are contrasted in Proverbs 29:7: The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor, the wicked does not understand such concern (v. 7). The difference lies in what each man notices and values.

The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor. The righteous man pays attention to those without resources. He notices their grievances. He acts on their behalf when he can. He understands that poverty does not erase a person's rights.

The wicked does not understand such concern. The wicked man literally does not understand. The category of caring about the poor is foreign to him. He sees the poor as a category to be ignored, used, or exploited, not as people whose rights matter. The verse names how moral orientation shapes basic perception. The same poor person is invisible to the wicked man and visible to the righteous one.
