Daniel 2:14-16 meaning

Verses covered in this passage:

  • Daniel 2:14
  • Daniel 2:15
  • Daniel 2:16

Daniel seeks an audience with the king so that he might, with wisdom from God, interpret the dream.

With the wisdom that God gave Daniel because he obeyed His commandments, Daniel visits Arioch, the captain of the king’s bodyguard, who had gone forth to slay the wisemen of Babylon. Daniel asks Arioch why the decree to kill all of the wisemen was so urgent.

Daniel’s approach is with discretion and discernment, seeking to deescalate the situation by reasoning with the captain. Captain Arioch explains how these wisemen failed to tell the king what he saw in his dream and what it meant. So Daniel requested of the king, that he would give Daniel time, in order that he might declare the interpretation of the dream to the king.

As we saw in Chapter 1, God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials. Because Daniel obeyed God, He gave Daniel favor with Arioch, the king’s commander. Daniel was able to ask Arioch for a special hearing with the king to interpret his dream.

Biblical Text:
14 Then Daniel replied with discretion and discernment to Arioch, the captain of the king’s bodyguard, who had gone forth to slay the wisemen of Babylon; 15 he said to Arioch, the king’s commander, “For what reason is the decree from the king so urgent?” Then Arioch informed Daniel about the matter. 16 So Daniel went in and requested of the king that he would give him time, in order that he might declare the interpretation to the king.
