Proverbs 26:8 meaning

Giving honor to a fool ruins the mechanism the way binding a stone permanently into a sling ruins the weapon.

The forceful image of Proverbs 26:8 presents honoring a fool in mechanical terms: Like one who binds a stone in a sling, so is he who gives honor to a fool (v. 8).

One who binds a stone in a sling. The sling was designed to release a stone with force. To bind the stone permanently into the sling defeats the entire purpose of the weapon. Both stone and sling become useless.

So is he who gives honor to a fool. Honor given to a fool fails in the same way, since that attribute was meant to recognize and reward virtue. Given to a fool, it does neither. The honor is wasted, the fool is corrupted further by it, and the giver has spoiled the very mechanism by which a community rewards what is good. The verse echoes the warning of verse 1 with a new image.
