Joshua 12 summarizes the Israelite victories after the people wandered in the wilderness for forty years. Under the leadership of Moses, they defeated King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan in the land east of the Jordan River. Moses gave the enemy's territories to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. Then, Moses died, and Joshua became the next leader. Under his leadership, the Israelites miraculously crossed the Jordan River and invaded the Canaanites. They destroyed many pagan cities and slaughtered their kings. Joshua divided the enemy's territories among the tribes of Israel, giving each one a proportionate share. The chapter's outline is as follows:

  1. The text summarizes Israel's conquest in the land east of the Jordan River. Moses and the Israelite army defeated King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan. He gave their territories to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh (vv 1-6).

  2. The text summarizes Israel’s conquest in the land west of the Jordan River. The army defeated thirty-one kings. Then, Joshua gave their land as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel (vv 7-24).
