Psalm Chapter 18 is a lengthy and triumphant song attributed to King David, who reigned over Judah from about 1010 BC to 1003 BC and then over all Israel until around 970 BC. This psalm is set within the broader context of David’s life, as he faced tremendous challenges from his enemies—most notably from King Saul (who ruled from approximately 1050 BC to 1010 BC). Traditionally, Psalm 18 is closely connected with the events recorded in 2 Samuel 22, a chapter that describes how God rescued David from his foes. The geographical setting includes the rugged wilderness areas and the strongholds around Judah, where David hid from Saul’s relentless pursuit.
In this psalm, David begins with praise, declaring, “I love You, O LORD, my strength” (Psalm 18:1). He uses vivid images to describe God’s deliverance, picturing Him as a rock, a fortress, and a shield. David recounts how dire his circumstances were, describing how “the cords of death encompassed me” (Psalm 18:4) and how only God’s mighty intervention saved him from destruction.
