Proverbs 14:21 meaning

Despising others is sin, but showing grace to the poor brings true blessing.

In Proverbs 14:21, Solomon writes, He who despises his neighbor sins, but happy is he who is gracious to the poor (v. 21). This verse corrects the social partiality noted in the previous one. To despise another person is not sophistication but sin.

The one who despises his neighbor sins because he violates the call to love others as fellow image-bearers of God. Contempt is morally wrong, since it denies dignity where God has given it.

By contrast, happy is he who is gracious to the poor. Grace toward the poor aligns with God’s heart and brings blessing to the one who practices it. This happiness is more than emotion; it is the settled well-being that comes from walking in mercy.
