Proverbs 17:10 meaning

A teachable person responds deeply to a single rebuke, while a fool may endure repeated discipline without learning.

Proverbs 17:10 presents how a simple contrast sharpens the value of teachability: A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred blows into a fool (v. 10). The difference lies not in the severity of the correction, but in the posture of the one receiving it.

A person who has understanding is so teachable that a single rebuke penetrates deeply. He hears, receives, and is changed by it. That is wisdom: not resisting correction, but allowing truth to do its work.

A fool, however, can endure a hundred blows and still not truly learn. Pain alone does not produce wisdom. Without humility, even repeated consequences may fail to reach the heart. This verse makes clear that growth depends less on the force of discipline and more on the responsiveness of the soul.
