What the plugin does

TBS Scripture Tagger helps WordPress sites make Bible references more useful. It scans posts and pages, detects plain-text sentences, and turns them into interactive links.

When enabled in plugin settings, readers can hover or tap references to see verse previews retrieved from The Bible Says API.

Built for WordPress

Automatically detects and links Bible references.

Displays hoverable verse preview tooltips.

Support English, Portuguese, and Chinese usage.

Works with major Wordpress themes without external dependencies.

WordPress plugin

Install on WordPress

Get the plugin from the WordPress Plugin Directory, activate it, and configure it from the plugin settings in WordPress.

Install the WordPress plugin from WordPress.org

Activate it from the Plugins menu in WordPress.

Add Bible references to posts or pages and let the plugin tag them.

You can configure hyperlink mode, new-tab behavior, existing-link handling, excluded tags/classes, and tooltip theme.

Verse previews from The Bible Says API are only fetched after external requests are enabled in plugin settings.

Script for any website

Copy and paste the script

Works on most websites, not only WordPress. If your website or site builder lets you add your own HTML or scripts, paste this code once and the Bible references on your pages become links with verse previews.

Place the configuration before the script tag. The public script URL is stable and can be loaded normally, with defer, with async, or after the document has already loaded.

HTML
<script>
  window.TBS = window.TBS || {};
  window.TBS.Tagger = {
    bibleVersion: "nasb95",
    linkMode: "tag-all",
    openInNewTab: true
  };
</script>
<script src="https://thebiblesays.com/api/scripture-tagger/v1.0.1/scripture-tagger.js" defer></script>

Where to place it

  • Paste the snippet before the closing body tag, or in the area where your site allows custom footer scripts.
  • Keep defer on the script tag unless your platform manages script loading for you.
  • After publishing, open a page with Bible references and hover or tap a reference to confirm the preview loads.

Optional settings

Change bibleVersion, linkMode, or openInNewTab in the configuration object before loading the script. The default English version is NASB95.

For churches

Helps readers see the passage behind sermon notes and study pages.

For WordPress

Install from the plugin directory and manage behavior from WordPress settings.

For multilingual content

Support English, Portuguese, and Chinese Bible references.
