Proverbs 17:14 meaning

Conflict should be stopped early, because once strife begins it can spread like released water.

Drawing on vivid water imagery, Proverbs 17:14 teaches that The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so abandon the quarrel before it breaks out (v. 14). Conflict often begins small, but once released it can become difficult to contain.

Letting out water evokes a breach in a dam or wall. At first the opening may seem minor, but once the flow begins, it can widen quickly. So it is with strife. One sharp word, unchecked grievance, or proud reaction can unleash more than anyone intended.

That is why Solomon says to abandon the quarrel before it breaks out. Wisdom knows that some conflicts should be stopped at the earliest stage. Once momentum builds, the damage multiplies. The wise aim not merely to win arguments, but to prevent avoidable destruction.
