Proverbs 17:27 meaning

Knowledge and understanding are often shown through restrained words and a calm spirit.

Proverbs 17:27 praises restraint and composure: He who restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding (v. 27). Wisdom often appears in what a person chooses not to say.

To restrain one’s words is evidence of knowledge because the wise understand the weight of speech. They do not feel compelled to say everything they think. Measured speech shows inner order, discretion, and respect for truth.

Similarly, a cool spirit marks understanding. A calm inner life keeps a person from reacting impulsively or destructively. Wisdom is not merely having information; it is the ability to remain governed, steady, and thoughtful under pressure.
