Proverbs 17:4 meaning

Wicked people are drawn to destructive speech because what they welcome with their ears reflects their hearts.

Proverbs 17:4 warns about moral appetite: An evildoer listens to wicked lips; a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue (v. 4). People are drawn toward the kind of speech that matches the direction of their heart.

An evildoer listens to wicked lips because evil seeks confirmation and reinforcement. What we are willing to hear often reveals what we secretly want. The heart that leans toward sin will often welcome voices that excuse, inflame, or normalize it.

Likewise, a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue. Falsehood attracts falsehood. Destructive speech becomes appealing when a person is already bent away from truth. This proverb shows that listening is itself a moral act. The words we entertain help shape the path we walk.
