Proverbs 18:4 meaning

Wise words are deep and life-giving, like a flowing source that refreshes those around it.

The imagery changes beautifully in Proverbs 18:4: The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; The fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook (v. 4). Solomon treats speech as something with depth and flow.

Deep waters suggest that words can carry substance far beneath the surface. Human speech is not trivial. It can reveal what is hidden, carry weight, and affect others profoundly. Some words are shallow, but wise words have depth because they rise from a formed heart.

Then Solomon compares the fountain of wisdom to a bubbling brook. Wisdom’s speech is not only deep, but living, moving, and refreshing. A bubbling brook nourishes what is around it. In the same way, wise words sustain, clarify, and bring life to those who receive them.
