Proverbs 19:18 meaning

Loving parents discipline while there is still time to redirect a child toward life.

Parental discipline is addressed plainly in Proverbs 19:18: Discipline your son while there is hope, and do not desire his death (v. 18). Proverbs sees correction as an expression of love, not hostility.

To discipline your son while there is hope means there is a formative window in which correction can shape character and redirect folly. Love does not simply wait and watch a son destroy himself. It acts while there is time to turn the path.

The final phrase is striking: do not desire his death. Refusing discipline may feel gentle in the moment, but if it abandons a child to folly, it is actually cruel. Solomon is teaching that real love is willing to correct because it seeks life, not merely short-term comfort.
