Proverbs 21:14 meaning

A private gift can quiet anger and even strong wrath; the wise reader notices the mechanism without endorsing the bribery it can become.

Solomon makes a careful observation about anger and gifts in Proverbs 21:14: A gift in secret subdues anger, And a bribe in the bosom, strong wrath (v. 14). This verse is more difficult than it first appears.

Solomon is observing how human anger actually works—a private gift can defuse a serious quarrel, and a bribe slipped into the fold of a robe can quiet even strong wrath. He is not, on the basis of this observation, endorsing bribery. Other proverbs explicitly condemn it (Proverbs 15:27; 17:23). This verse describes a mechanism rather than commending it.

The wise person reads the mechanism and decides what to do with it. A reconciling gift offered openly to a wronged friend is one thing; a bribe slipped to a judge is another, and the rest of Proverbs is unambiguous about which is which.
