Proverbs 21:24 meaning

Pride wears three names at once—proud, haughty, scoffer—and the wise will recognize the cluster when it appears.

Solomon names a single man under three labels in Proverbs 21:24: "Proud," "Haughty," "Scoffer," are his names, Who acts with insolent pride (v. 24). The verse personifies pride.

The man who acts with insolent pride wears three names at once. He is proud (in his bearing), haughty (in his eyes), and a scoffer (in his speech). The three names are not synonyms; they describe how pride manifests at the levels of self-image, posture toward others, and verbal contempt for what does not bow.

The verse is a warning against acquiring any of the three names. It is also a help to the discerning observer: when these traits cluster in a man, the wise will recognize him for what he is.
