Proverbs 28:11 meaning

The rich man is wise in his own eyes, but the poor man with understanding sees through him.

Proverbs 28:11 names how wealth distorts self-assessment: The rich man is wise in his own eyes, but the poor who has understanding sees through him (v. 11). The wealthy man's self-image is exposed.

The rich man is wise in his own eyes, because wealth produces a particular kind of self-deception. The man who has money assumes his money proves his wisdom. He concludes that his judgment must be sound because his bank account is large.

But the poor who has understanding sees through him. The poor man, having no money to insulate his thinking, often has clearer sight. He has not been taught to mistake his portfolio for his wisdom. He looks at the rich man and sees both the wealth and the foolishness underneath. Solomon honors the rare poor man whose understanding reads the rich man more accurately than the rich man reads himself.
