King Pekah of Israel
Pekah was the son of Remaliah and became king over the northern kingdom of Israel after assassinating Pekahiah. He reigned in Samaria for 20 years and continued in the sins of Jeroboam, keeping Israel in the false worship that had led the nation away from the LORD. His reign came during the final years of the northern kingdom, as Assyria was growing stronger and Israel was moving closer to exile.
Pekah formed an alliance with Rezin king of Aram and went to war against Judah during the reign of King Ahaz. During Pekah’s reign, Tiglath-pileser III king of Assyria captured many cities in northern Israel and carried people away into exile. Pekah was later assassinated by Hoshea, who became Israel’s final king. His reign shows the political violence, foreign pressure, and spiritual decline that marked Israel’s last days before its fall.
