King Hoshea of Israel
Hoshea was the son of Elah and became the final king of the northern kingdom of Israel after assassinating Pekah. He reigned in Samaria for nine years. Scripture says that Hoshea did evil in the sight of the LORD, though not to the same degree as some of the kings before him. His reign took place during Israel's final years, when Assyria had become the dominant power in the region.
Hoshea became a servant of Shalmaneser king of Assyria and paid tribute to him, but later he rebelled by seeking help from Egypt and withholding payment. Because of this, Assyria invaded Israel, captured Samaria after a siege, and carried the people of Israel into exile. Hoshea's reign marks the end of the northern kingdom, showing the final result of Israel's long pattern of idolatry, rebellion, and refusal to return to the LORD.
