Matthew 1:6a meaning

Matthew completes his first major section of the genealogy with King David.

The parallel account of this genealogical record is found in Luke 3:32.

Matthew now completes his first major section within Jesus’ genealogy from Abraham to David the king. Obed was the father of Jesse, who was the father of David the king. Matthew associates Jesus with being the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham to bless all the nations of the earth (Genesis 12:3). Matthew will establish Jesus as being in David’s royal line and heir to the throne of David the long-awaited king of Israel and the Messiah, or anointed one. The Messiah was expected to ascend to the throne of David the king, based on God’s promise that someone from his line would sit on his throne forever (2 Samuel 7:13). Matthew presents Jesus as the fulfillment of that promise. A significant theme in the New Testament is that people missed Jesus as the Messiah because He did not fit their political expectations.
