Micah 6:1-5 brings a covenant lawsuit against Israel, calling the ancient mountains to testify. He challenges His people to identify any injustice He has committed against them. He then reviews His covenant faithfulness, recounting how He redeemed them from Egypt, provided them with godly leaders, turned a curse into a blessing, and safely brought them from Shittim to Gilgal.
Micah 6:6-8 describes a worshiper who approaches God as though he were bidding for His favor: burnt offerings, yearling calves, rams by the thousand, rivers of oil, and finally a firstborn child. The proposed offerings escalate, but the premise behind them misunderstands God entirely. What could possibly satisfy the LORD? Micah answers that God requires His people to do justice, love steadfast covenant faithfulness, and walk humbly with Him.
Micah 6:9-12 shows the LORD's voice calling out through the city. He cross-examines Jerusalem's economy: treasures earned through fraud, an undersized measure, rigged scales, and a merchant's bag filled with deceptive weights. The wealthy practice violence, and ordinary citizens have learned to make deceit their common language.
Micah 6:13-16: The verdict is issued. God will personally enforce the covenant/treaty's penalty clauses: sickness, food without satisfaction, loss of wealth, harvests eaten by invaders. Judah imitated the legacy of kings Omri and Ahab, the northern kingdom's most corrupt dynasty, so Judah will inherit their ruin and their disgrace.
Micah Chapter 6 opens the third and final message of the book with a covenant lawsuit. In this chapter, the LORD brings His case against His people, declares what He requires of them, and announces judgment against a society that has traded in dishonest scales, deceit, and violence. The chapter moves from the LORD's dealings with the nations to His courtroom confrontation with His own people. Having announced His judgment against the rebellious nations, the LORD now brings His covenant people to account for their own covenant violations. The chapter's outline is as follows:
- The LORD brings His covenant case against His people (vv 1-5)
- The LORD reveals what He requires of His people (vv 6-8)
- The LORD exposes the city's injustice and deceit (vv 9-12)
- The LORD announces judgment for His people's covenant unfaithfulness (vv 13-16)
