Proverbs 10:12 meaning

Hatred creates conflict, but love chooses to forgive and restore.

In Proverbs 10:12, Solomon says: Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all transgressions (v. 12). Hatred does not merely harbor hostility; it stirs up and inflames conflict. It keeps offenses alive and continually turns them into fresh occasions for division.

Love, by contrast, covers all transgressions. This does not mean that love pretends sin is good or ignores justice. It means love does not delight in exposing, amplifying, and weaponizing the failures of others. Love moves toward restoration wherever possible rather than toward public humiliation or revenge.

This principle appears again in 1 Peter 4:8, where love is said to cover a multitude of sins. Love covers because it seeks healing, peace, and reconciliation. Hatred keeps reopening wounds, but love chooses the path that can mend what sin has torn.
