Proverbs 10:7 meaning

The righteous leave behind an honored memory, but the wicked leave behind a decaying reputation.

In Proverbs 10:7, Solomon says, The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot (v. 7). This proverb looks beyond a person’s present life to what remains after him. It teaches that the moral shape of a life determines the kind of legacy it leaves behind.

The righteous leave a blessed memory because their lives continue to bear fruit even after they are gone. Their faithfulness, wisdom, kindness, and integrity become a continuing source of gratitude to others. A righteous person’s name is remembered with honor because what he built was real and life-giving.

But the name of the wicked will rot. Rot is a powerful image because it describes decay from within. A wicked reputation may look impressive for a time, but it cannot endure because it lacks moral substance. This verse reminds us that legacy is not built on visibility or success alone, but on whether a life was rooted in truth before God.
