Proverbs 11:10 meaning

A city rejoices when the righteous prosper and celebrates when wickedness is removed.

In Proverbs 11:10, Solomon says, When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices, and when the wicked perish, there is joyful shouting (v. 10). This proverb turns from the individual to the public good. Righteousness blesses not only private life, but the wider community.

A city rejoices when the righteous prosper because righteous people tend to govern, speak, and act in ways that benefit others. Their flourishing often creates peace, justice, stability, and opportunity beyond themselves. Wisdom has communal effects.

Likewise, when the wicked perish, there is joyful shouting because oppression, deceit, and disorder are removed. This is not a celebration of cruelty, but relief at the end of destructive influence. Proverbs recognizes that evil burdens communities, and its removal can be a mercy to many.
