Proverbs 11:4 meaning

Riches cannot save in the day of judgment, but righteousness delivers from death.

In Proverbs 11:4, Solomon says, Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death (v. 4). Wealth can be useful in many ordinary situations, but there is a boundary beyond which money has no power. When God’s judgment comes, riches cannot purchase exemption.

The day of wrath points to a moment of reckoning, when appearances fall away and truth is fully exposed. On that day, accumulated resources cannot save the soul or justify a crooked life. This is why Proverbs keeps warning against false confidence in material advantage.

By contrast, righteousness delivers from death. In immediate terms, righteousness preserves a person from many destructive outcomes. In the larger biblical story, this points beyond itself to the only lasting refuge from deathGod’s provision of righteousness. Romans 3:22-24 points to the righteousness given through Jesus, who alone fully rescues from death (to learn more about how God provides righteousness through Christ as the only lasting rescue from death and the means to live according to His design, please read our commentary on 2 Corinthians 5:21).
