To be right in his own eyes is to trust oneself as final authority. This is one of the deepest problems Proverbs addresses: a person can be entirely sincere and still be entirely wrong. Self-trust without humility bends a person away from wisdom.
The wise man, by contrast, listens to counsel. He knows he is limited and therefore receives perspective from outside himself. This humility is not weakness but strength. Wisdom grows where pride is willing to be corrected and where instruction is welcomed rather than resisted.
