Proverbs 12:2 meaning

The good receive God’s favor, but those who scheme evil place themselves under His condemnation.

In Proverbs 12:2, Solomon says, A good man will obtain favor from the LORD, but He will condemn a man who devises evil (v. 2). This proverb contrasts the man whose life is morally sound with the man who plans wickedness in his heart. God does not merely observe these two lives; He responds to them.

The good man receives favor from the LORD because his life is aligned with what God approves. This is not teaching sinless perfection, but a heart that seeks what is upright, just, and faithful. God’s favor rests where there is sincerity and willingness to walk in His ways.

The one who devises evil is not stumbling accidentally into sin. He is planning it, shaping intention around it, and choosing crookedness on purpose. That is why God condemns him. Proverbs reminds us that evil begins in the inner person, and the Lord judges not only actions but the schemes from which actions arise.
