Proverbs 16:13 meaning

Truthful speech is precious to good rulers because justice depends on honest voices.

Proverbs 16:13 shows what rulers should value: Righteous lips are the delight of kings, and he who speaks right is loved (v. 13). Good leadership depends not only on speaking rightly, but on surrounding itself with truthful voices.

A wise king delights in righteous lips because such speech helps him govern well. Leaders who love only flattering words set themselves up for disaster. Speech that is truthful and upright is far more valuable than praise that hides reality.

This proverb also highlights the social power of truthfulness. One who speaks right becomes deeply valuable, especially in settings where judgment and public order matter. Righteous speech is a gift to authority because it makes justice more possible.
