Proverbs 16:17 meaning

The upright preserve life by turning away from evil and watching carefully over their path.

Proverbs 16:17 presents a road image: The highway of the upright is to depart from evil; he who watches his way preserves his life (v. 17). Uprightness is pictured as a clear road, and that road is marked by turning away from what is evil.

To depart from evil is not merely to dislike it in theory, but to move away from it in practice. The upright refuse the crooked turn because they know evil is not a harmless option but a destructive path. This fits the major theme in Proverbs that the way of wisdom and the way of wickedness are mutually exclusive roads.

The one who watches his way preserves life because careful attention to one’s path prevents many self-inflicted ruins. Wisdom does not drift. It watches, discerns, and turns away when needed.
