Proverbs 25:14 meaning

A man who boasts of false generosity is like clouds and wind that promise rain and deliver none.

Proverbs 25:14 paints the opposite picture of the previous verse: Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of his gifts falsely (v. 14). The image promises and disappoints.

In an agricultural land dependent on rain, the appearance of dark clouds and a strong wind set every farmer's hopes rising. When the clouds pass without delivering rain, the disappointment is sharp. The land needed water. The sky promised it. Nothing came down.

A man who boasts of his gifts falsely is a man who promises generosity and never delivers, who tells everyone what he is going to give and then fails to give it, plays the role of empty clouds. He raises expectations and dashes them. The verse names a particular kind of social damage: the man who promises much and gives nothing. The withholding cuts deeper because the promise was broadcast.
