Proverbs 29:12 meaning

A ruler who listens to lies fills his court with wicked ministers.

The corrupting power of a ruler's ear is exposed in Proverbs 29:12: If a ruler pays attention to falsehood, all his ministers become wicked (v. 12). The downstream effect is named.

The ruler's ear sets the tone: If a ruler pays attention to falsehood. If he listens to lies, accepts flattery, rewards distortion, his court will produce more of what he listens to.

All his ministers become wicked. Those serving the ruler adapt to what he rewards. They learn that lies advance them and truth costs them. The whole court tilts wicked. The verse names a real pattern in any organization. Leaders who listen to truth produce truth-telling subordinates; leaders who reward lying produce lying subordinates. The ruler is responsible for what his court becomes.
