Moses commands the Israelites to be diligent to continue an attitude of gratitude to the LORD for what He has done for them and for who He is to them. To not forget God’s commands when circumstances become comfortable. To not forget God when the need to depend on Him is not as apparent.

The Israelites are commanded to constantly reflect on God’s covenantal laws, to diligently teach them to their children, and to share them to the entire community.

The LORD requires an undivided love and loyalty from the Israelites, because He alone is their God.

Moses urges the Israelites to observe God’s precepts in order that they and their descendants might learn to fear the LORD their God all the days of their lives. To do so will bring them prolonged days.

The LORD accepted Israel’s request for Moses to serve as their mediator. So, He commanded Moses to tell the people to return to their tents while Moses alone would stay near Him in order to receive the instructions for the people.

At Mount Sinai, all the heads of Israel’s tribes urged Moses to serve as Israel’s intercessor because they all were afraid when they heard God’s voice and saw His glory being displayed in a blazing fire.

The LORD prohibits covetousness.

The LORD prohibits His people against false testimony.

The LORD commands His people not to steal.

God prohibits Israel from committing adultery.

The Israelites are commanded not to commit murder.

God asks the Israelites to honor their parents so that they might live a long and prosperous life in the Promised Land.

The LORD asks Israel to observe the Sabbath as a reminder of their redemption from slavery in Egypt.

God warned Israel against misusing His name because He will punish anyone who dishonors Him.

The LORD prohibits the Israelites from worshipping idols.

The LORD demands exclusive loyalty from the Israelites because He alone is God.

Moses exhorts the Israelites to obey God’s commandments by reminding them of God’s manifestation at Mount Horeb (Sinai) where He established a covenant relationship with them, to make them a nation that serves a priestly function if they would walk in obedience.

This section provides the historical and geographical setting for the covenant message. It also summarizes Israel’s victory over the two kings of the Amorites, across the Jordan to the east.

After Israel’s conquest across the Jordan to the east, Moses sets apart three cities there to provide asylum for unintentional homicide.

Since God is unique among the gods, Moses calls the Israelites to obey God’s precepts in order that they may live long in the Promised Land.
