Proverbs 15:28 meaning

The righteous think carefully before speaking, while the wicked carelessly pour out evil.

A contrast in speech and reflection appears again in Proverbs 15:28: The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things (v. 28). Wisdom thinks before speaking.

The heart of the righteous ponders because righteousness includes deliberation. The wise do not treat words lightly. They weigh their response, seeking what is true, fitting, and beneficial. Thoughtfulness is one mark of moral maturity.

The mouth of the wicked, however, pours out evil things. Evil spills from them because there is no careful stewardship of speech. Their words are impulsive, corrupt, and revealing. Once again Proverbs ties the mouth to the heart and shows that wise speech begins with a wise interior life.
