Proverbs 15:5 meaning

Fools reject correction, while sensible people receive reproof and grow wiser through it.

Here in Proverbs 15:5, Solomon returns to the theme of correction: A fool rejects his father’s discipline, but he who regards reproof is sensible (v. 5). The dividing line between wisdom and folly is often seen in how a person responds to instruction.

The fool rejects discipline because he resents being corrected. He views rebuke as interference rather than as help. This posture reveals pride, he would rather defend himself than grow. Proverbs consistently teaches that this kind of self-protective stubbornness leads away from life.

The one who regards reproof, however, is sensible. He sees correction as something worth receiving and weighing. Sensibility is not merely intelligence; it is the humility that allows truth to reshape one’s path. Wisdom enters where defensiveness loosens its grip.
