We are empowered to live the new resurrected life of Christ through entering God’s presence. Christ is our priest, and He makes our hearts clean and pure by faith. 

In this New Covenant under Christ, the law of God is in our hearts and minds, and our sins have been forgiven and forgotten.

Earthly priests make animal sacrifices again and again, yet they cannot take away sins. Christ, in one sacrifice, covered sins forever. Christ now sits on a throne at the right hand of God. His work of atonement is complete.

Jesus fulfilled God’s will. He died on the cross and was resurrected, being the ultimate, once-and-for-all sacrifice. In doing so He established a new covenant.

Jesus came to earth to fulfill God’s will, which was to make a once-and-for-all sacrifice for sin. It was necessary that He come into the world because the Levitical sacrifices were insufficient.

The law is not sufficient and animal blood doesn’t completely atone for sin. They served as ongoing reminders of sin.

Christ’s sacrifice was better than any previous sacrifices: He offered it in the presence of God, the blood of the sinless Son was offered, and it was offered once for all.

Death is necessary to validate a covenant; death played a role in the Old and the New Covenants. 

If the blood of animals was able to cleanse sins, then through the blood of Christ we will gain much more, leading to a life of constructive service to God and freedom from a cluttered conscience.

Christ’s priestly ministry is better than that of the Old Covenant. He entered the greater tabernacle, through His own blood, and He did it once for all.

The law and the tabernacle served as a representation of Christ and the true tabernacle in heaven, and now that Christ has come it is fulfilled. The truths demonstrated inside the tabernacle are now to be a reality within the tabernacle of the human bodies of believers, in their conscience.

The Old Covenant had regulations for worship, and the Pauline Author explains some of them here. He will then proceed to show how these look forward to and teach of Jesus. 

The law was not useful in changing men’s hearts, but Christ has put God’s law into our hearts and has restored our relationship with God. Our sins are forever forgiven under this New Covenant.

Christ’s ministry as our High Priest is greater than any other ministry. The earthly priests served the Law and the Old Covenant, but Christ has brought a New Covenant with new and better promises.

The job of a priest is to offer gifts and sacrifices to God on man’s behalf. Christ, as a priest, has a superior office to earthly priests, and offered a superior sacrifice. Earthly priests are serving as a picture of Heaven. The tabernacle in the Old Testament was only a copy of Heaven. 

Jesus is the perfect high priest. He sits at the right hand of God. He helps us from Heaven.

If human perfection could have come through the Levitical priesthood and the Old Covenant (the law), we would not have needed the greater priest (Christ) and the New Covenant He brought. 

The Levitical priesthood and the law were necessary parts of the Old Covenant. Someone greater than the Levite priests was needed because of the insufficiency of the law to make people perfect.

Melchizedek was greater than Abraham and greater than other priests because Abraham gave him a tenth of the spoils and because Abraham received a blessing from Melchizedek.

The Pauline Author starts out by explaining the great priesthood of Melchizedek as a reflection of the priesthood of Jesus.
